Created before 1977, the University of Birmingham Archery Club is one of the oldest University archery clubs still influential and competitive within student archery. Originally named the Chamberlain Bowmen (after the university’s first Chancellor), the club has gone through many names throughout the years. Rebranded in 1979, due to AU rules, we changed to BUTTS, Birmingham University Toxophily and Toucan Society. Since 1979, toucans have been a large part of our club, as many members have their own toucan toy and members of the performance team can be seen with toucan stickers on their bows. In 1995 we created the BUTTS league (officially the BUTTS Challenge league) beginning with us challenging other clubs to competitions. It has now grown into one of the best and most challenging divisions of student archery. In the 2000s, when the University rebranded itself again, BUTTS followed suit and transformed from BUTTS to UBAC. Finally in 2024, the BUTTS league rebranded as the TOUCAN League and that brings us to the present. Many of our esteemed alumni are still heavily involved with archery, including chairman for BUCS archery, shooting for Archery GB, and even becoming Olympians!
